Blacklock Blast – February 20

February 20, 2020

This week, our Grades 2-5 students participated in some fun field trips.  A special thank you to all who made these events possible and congratulations to the students for being great ambassadors for our school!

Today, our students gathered for a special assembly to make our students aware of the terrible consequences of the Australian Bushfires.  Mrs. Atherton and I shared our personal connection to the impact this has had on our families.  Thanks go out to Mr. Huang, Ms. Lou Lou, and the Glee Club for performing three Australian songs during the assembly!  The students and staff would like to embark upon a special fundraising initiative to support the Australia Zoo Hospital.  We will have various fundraisers for this special cause, beginning with tomorrow’s Treat Day.  Students have been busy creating blank occasion cards and koala bead keychains, which will be for sale at the upcoming pod shows.  Stay tuned for more ways to support this endeavour.

Also, at an assembly on Tuesday this week, our students were challenged to undertake a mission to discover where in the world is Carmen Sandiego and a ‘stolen piece of Blacklock’s history’.  Our mischievous Librarian Mrs. Huang and her equally mischievous Library Tech Mrs. MacLean have created an introductory video ‘Where In The World is Carmen Sandiego?’ to set the scene for this mission.  It would be helpful to the students if you would support and encourage them to follow the clues to discover where the culprit Carmen Sandiego is.  More information can be found on the official website by clicking here —> Where In The World is Carmen Sandiego? Official Website and clues can be accessed through this QR Code:

Reminder that Monday, February 24 is Report Card Prep/Design & Assessment Day and there will be no school for students.  Also, please note that the PAC has organized a Kids Swap Meet for this Saturday, February 22 from 10:00am to 2:00pm in our Gym.  See below for more details.

As we are beginning preparations for the 2020/2021 school year, it is important that you advise the office if you plan on sending your child to a different school next year.  In this way, we can get accurate  numbers for planning purposes.

Next week, the Langley School District will be celebrating Diversity and Respect Week.  Each day, students and staff will be honouring different themes and are encouraged to wear whatever represents that day’s theme:  Tuesday – Cultural Day, Wednesday – Pink Shirt/Anti-Bullying Day, Thursday – Be Unique/Be Yourself Day, and Friday – Rainbow Pride Day

Blacklock Bedtime Stories are posted on: Youtube: The Mischievous Librarian every Thursday night at 6:00pm.  This week will feature what we shared with our students at the assembly on Tuesday morning; namely, our introduction to Where In The World is Carmen Sandiego?  Be sure to check it out!  If you haven’t watched previous episodes, they can be found there also.

Here are the current standings:
Monkeys – 12,386; Parrots – 12,958; Geckos – 12,817; and Jaguars – 12,569.

Have another great long weekend!
