The mural and wooden cut-outs project for our Main Entrance is well underway. Our Aboriginal artists Carman, Dawn, and Jackie have been working collaboratively with our students as they work to create a mural that will reflect that the land the school is on has been lived on for 9,000 years, including local nations Kwantlen, Matsqui, Semiahmoo, Nooksack, and the Katzie. The urban setting today, Langley, is home to many nations of people, which draws our attention to the medicine wheel…..four equal parts to create one whole idea, which is interconnected to all parts of life. There are dozens of ways to look at the medicine wheel. A few that the artists and the students have been considering: four parts to a person, four sacred animals, and four parts to a community. The design from the front doors will move to the left and the right, featuring the senses, including the idea of seeing, feeling, thinking, and then doing. Local ecology, animals, and the natural setting, will inspire wooden art pieces, which will be installed along the walls. This artistic work will celebrate our Arts and Aboriginal curriculum in a piece that will pay tribute to the work and learning that happens within our school.
It is with great sadness and regret that we need to address the following: One of the three Aboriginal masks that hang as part of our pledge to reconciliation was taken without permission off the wall in our school last week. This one mask connects the artist, the donor, the reconciliation ceremony, and the community. We would ask that the mask be returned to the office as soon as possible and no questions will be asked. As an Arts school, where we teach our children to appreciate and respect art, this act of disrespect is incredibly offensive. It is our hope that this matter can be resolved. Information can be sent to seppich@sd35.bc.ca.
Wishing all of you a great weekend.
