Blacklock Blast – October 26, 2023

October 26, 2023

Today was the first day that our students and staff wore their beautiful House Shirts.  Please remember to wear them with pride every Thursday so that house points can be awarded.  We all looked great!

Congratulations to Blacklock Fine Arts!  As the winning school of the Fire Drill Contest for Fire Prevention Week, we won a $200 gift certificate to the Teachers Tool Chest on behalf of the Downtown Langley Business Association members!  Mrs. Huang, on behalf of all the students in our school, used the gift certificate to purchase two sets of puppets and matching books.

A huge thank you to the Blacklock PAC as they prepare for tomorrow’s Trunk or Treat event from 6:30pm to 8:30pm in the Gym and on the Blacktop.  This is a reminder that students are not to wear costumes to school tomorrow, but are encouraged to wear them next Tuesday, October 31, for our annual Halloween Parade and Dance Off commencing at 1:30pm.  Out of respect for our students and staff, please note that masks, weapons, gory makeup, or otherwise frightening costumes are not permitted.  Teachers will inform you of any specific Halloween activities occurring in their classroom.  If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

The upcoming Remembrance Day Ceremony will be held on November 8th at 1:30pm in our Gym. Please prepare all black clothing for this day.  It is important that the clothing does not have any visible logos, stripes, tags, or words on them.  If you have any questions, concerns, or difficulty providing this clothing please don’t hesitate to reach out.  All students will be receiving a poppy and we would request that you send a Loonie on the day of the ceremony as a donation to help support the local legion.  Parents are welcome to attend.  Please note that the doors will open at 1:00pm.

As the weather continues to cool down and the rainy season is upon us, ensuring that your child has appropriate clothing and footwear for outdoor play is very important.

If your child will be absent from school for any reason, please remember to let us know either by phone 604-530-3188 or by e-mail at BFAAttendanceVoicemail@sd35.bc.ca

Wishing everyone a great weekend!

Susanna Eppich, Principal

Hammerhead Sharks – 1,100; Jellyfish – 1,170; Kraken – 1,020; Orca Whales – 1,040

💰We sold 356 books! That’s $4,610.20 in revenue!!

👩🏻‍🎓144 students sold a book! That’s 56% of our School population. (Works out to be 1.37 books per student)

❌ 17 books were not returned. That’s not terrible, but not great.

THANK-YOU everyone for your purchases and a BIG thank you to a good handful of families that sold over 10 books this year!

🎉🎉🎉 WINNERS! 🎉🎉🎉

🐟 🍕🎉the 2/3 pod wins the pizza party with 142 books sold. The 4/5s sold 104 and the k/1s sold 110 💪🏻. Nice work everyone! We’ll be connecting with the 2/3 pod teachers and staff to figure out when to celebrate.

👪 top selling family: “E.H” in grade 4 (Ms. McConnell’s class) with 20 books sold 🤩😳🤯. They win four front row spots for the Christmas and Winter Solstice Sing-A-Long.

Random draw prizes:  (every student that sold a book was entered into a draw to win!). We will be connecting with the families directly, and once notified, they can choose to comment as well 🤗.

STUDENT LEARNING

The Ministry of Education has made changes to the process through which we communicate student learning (report cards).  Because the Langley School District is complying with the new Ministry of Education Reporting Order, reporting will look different than what you’re used to.  This year, there will be five opportunities to receive information about your child’s learning.  These will include both informal and formal written reports and student inclusive conferences.  As always, staff are available for you to ask any questions as we work together to ensure that every child moves forward in their learning.  Because of this transition, the school calendars that were posted to both the School District and Blacklock websites were unclear.  Therefore, here are the dates with respect to communicating student learning that you need to be aware of:

  • October 27 – Informal Report Card/Learning Update sent home – Grades K-5
  • December 4 – Report Card published in MyED BC – Grades K-5
  • March 6 – 2 Hour Early Dismissal to allow for Student Inclusive Conferences – Grades K-5
  • March 7 – No Students In Attendance to allow for Student Inclusive Conferences – Grade K-5
  • May 6 – Informal Learning Update e-mailed home – Grades K-5
  • June 27 – Final Formal Report Card published online in MyED BC
CHRISTMAS and WINTER SOLSTICE SING-A-LONG

We are excited to let you know that this year our traditional Christmas and Winter Solstice Sing-A-Long will be held at HD Stafford Middle School on Thursday, December 14, to allow room for all our families to attend!  Students will need to arrive at HD Stafford at 5:30pm and the official start time will be at 6:00pm with more details to come.
