September 14, 2018

This week we held our first school-wide assembly, where we introduced our theme for the year…A Year At Hogwarts. In true Blacklock fashion, the staff have created their own spin to the much-loved Harry Potter series. During Professor Dumbledore’s speech to the students, the very silly and naughty Voldermort and his snake Nagini stole the magical Philosopher’s Stone. The students will need to use their knowledge of the Leader In Me seven habits to complete tasks to get back the Philosopher’s Stone from Voldermort. We hope you enjoy our original and non-scary take on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
Here are some important reminders as we start this new school year: Please send your children with appropriate clothing for the weather, since we will be sending the children outside at every opportunity. Send a water bottle with your child and when you’re packing healthy snacks and lunches and please do not include any items containing peanuts. Please contact the Office if your child will be away for any reason. On a number of occasions, the pearcing screams from children (both inside and outside the building) have caused staff to think that there is an emergency. Please help us to educate our children that screaming is for emergencies only.
There have been some questions in regards to School Cash Online and we’d like to clarify that you have the option to pay either directly from your bank account (just like using a debit card) or by major credit card. A bright green information sheet was sent home with your child in their brown envelope with instructions on how to pay online. It takes less than five minutes to register! Please note that for safety and efficiency reasons, the School District would like to reduce the amount of cash and cheques coming into our school and we would appreciate your help in making this a reality.
For your convenience, we have laptops set up in our Library that are available to you during school hours to set up and give you access to your School Cash Online and/or MyEd BC Family Portal accounts.
Thank you to everyone who attended our first PAC meeting. They are a wonderful group and have exciting plans for this school year. Our next meeting will be on October 2 @ 7:00pm and all are welcome to attend.
Looking forward to another busy week at Blacklock. On Tuesday afternoon, between 3:00 and 4:00pm is our Meet The Staff Drop In. Please feel free to drop in to your child’s classroom and see the exciting things they have planned for this upcoming school year.
Friday, September 21, Blacklock will participate in our annual Terry Fox Run, commencing at 9:30am in our Gym. Students will watch a brief video about Terry’s journey, followed by a warm-up, after which students will be dismissed in their Grade groups to complete the run. Toonies for Terry will be collected and all proceeds will be donated to the Terry Fox Foundation. Parents are welcome to stay as it is also School Improvement Day, where students will have an Early Dismissal @ 10:45am. Please make arrangements to have your child picked up by 10:45am, as there is no supervision after that time.
If you haven’t sent in a photo celebrating family activities over the summer, please e-mail your photograph to seppich@sd35.bc.ca or print one out and drop it off at the Office.

Please note the letter from the Library:
Dear Blacklock Families,
We’re thrilled to announce that our school is taking part in the 2018 Indigo Adopt a School program! Our school has been adopted by Willowbrook Mall Coles for second year. That means that from September 15 to October 7, this store is going to fundraise on our behalf.
We’re also going to be raising funds to support our library by using the Adopt a School online fundraising platform, which you can find at adoptaschool.indigo.ca.
There are four ways that our community can support our school during the Adopt a School program:
- Book Bonus:For every two books you donate to our school online, the Love of Reading Foundation will donate a bonus book, up to 100 books!*
- Tell a Story, Give a Story:Every time you post a story to our Adopt a School profile, the Love of Reading Foundation will donate one book in support of our school library, up to 20 books!
- Adopt a School Story Contest:“Heart” your favourite story to help us win big! The five most-loved stories in each province will be entered into a random draw for a chance to win* a grand prize of a $2,500 Indigo eGiftcard to purchase books! The remaining four top “hearted” schools in each province will win a $500 Indigo eGiftcard to purchase books.
- Visit Willowbrook Mall Coles and donate to our school at the cash register!
Our school is going to receive every dollar raised to support our library and a 30% discount off books when we shop at Indigo, Chapters and Coles using program donations.
Please visit adoptaschool.indigo.ca or visit Willowbrook Mall Coles from September 15 to October 7 to show your support for our library! I look forward to surprising the staff and children at Blacklock Fine Arts Elementary with all the new library books this year!

Please note the letter from Mr. Peter Ing, one of our violin teachers:
Hello Everyone,
Hope you all had a wonderful summer break and a smooth transition back-to-school.
The violin program is starting soon and this year we have an exciting year to look forward to. We will definitely be doing a Harry Potter theme this year along with the school.
I hope to continue with the same groups as last year. Groups will be sorted at the first week of violin (Sept 18th & 19th). The “concert violin team” will be continuing as well. More details on that will follow.
