Blacklock Blast – September 25, 2023

September 25, 2023

Happy Monday Blacklock families!

Just a reminder to please return the completed forms that came home in the brown envelope to your child’s teacher asap. As the weather is starting to turn, we are going to see some rainy days. Please send your child to school with weather appropriate attire as we will head outside for playtime rain or shine. Please review the Blast for information regarding events happening around the school.

Picture Day

We’re excited to have Made the Grade Photography take our school portraits on Wednesday, September 27th. We encourage all parents to register for picture day ahead of time using the link below to ensure your gallery is emailed to you the moment it’s live. Registration isn’t mandatory, though it’s the easiest way to get access to your pictures when they’re ready. There is no need to use the below link if you’ve already registered using the QR code on the take-home flyers or picture day posters.

Your child’s school portrait is something you’ll appreciate for years to come. The best way to prepare your child is by reminding them that picture day is going to be a ton of fun! Please add Wednesday, September 27th to your calendars and remember to have your children dress for the occasion – solid colours are best and please try to avoid words or logos on clothes. If you have any questions or if you’d like some tips on how to best prepare, you can visit www.ma-dethegrade.ca or give them a call at 778.960.8394.

Family Photo Day

Rainforest Learning Centre is excited to host a family photo day on Oct 28, 2023. The sitting fee is $25, and you will receive an 8×10 included with your sitting fee. Your sitting time is approx. 15 min. I can tell you that 15 min is surprisingly a lot of time. Last year I did this with my own children, and we took 2 time slots to make sure we had enough time. I ended up with over 100 shots and all of them were amazing. Especially the silly ones.

These photos are great for your own wall but also for gifts. The holidays are approaching and what a wonderful gift these would be for grandparents, Aunts, and uncles. You can purchase enlargements directly from HT Photography or you can purchase the disk with all your photos and have the enlargements done somewhere else. I purchased the disk and printed my pics through Costco online. I made Christmas cards and framed enlargements for family members.

Use the link below to book your time. I hope to see you all there.

October – Child health screenings: vision, hearing and dental

Make dental, hearing and vision checks part of a healthy routine

Health screenings help find issues early which can make treatment easier and more effective. It’s important for your child to have regular eye exams and routine dental checkups. It is also important to recognize any hearing loss early as this is essential for speech and language development. Read on to learn when and how to access services for your child.

Dental

Tooth decay is the most common, but preventable, childhood chronic disease. It is important to establish good oral hygiene at a young age and have children’s teeth checked by a dentist regularly. To find a local dentist near you who is accepting new patients, visit the BC Dental Association’s Find a Dentist database. If you are a member of a low-income family and you do not have extended health coverage, there are several programs that can help you access affordable dentistry for your children. You can also contact the dental program at your local public health unit and ask about resources available in your community.

Vision

BC Doctors of Optometry recommends children receive their first eye exam when they are six to nine months old with a follow up exam at least once between the ages of two and five and then yearly once they enter school. You can find an optometrist accepting new patients near you at the College of Optometrists of British Columbia’s Find an Optometrist database. In B.C., basic eye exams, one per year, are free up to the age of 18. Some optometrists may charge a small user fee of about $35 per visit so be sure to ask about any fees before you make an appointment.

Hearing

Good hearing is essential for speech and language development and plays an important part in a child’s social and emotional growth. It is important to recognize hearing loss early and seek out testing and treatment if needed. Fraser Health’s Public Health community audiologists provide hearing services for children from birth to 19 years of age. If you have a concern about your child’s hearing, referrals can be made by a parent or caregiver, a health care provider or education professional to your local public health audiology (hearing) clinic.
