Blacklock Blast – September 27

September 27, 2018

Congratulations Blacklock!  We raised $485 to support cancer research through the Terry Fox Foundation!  Points have been added to each of the houses.  Here are the current standings:
Slytherin – 112; Hufflepuff – 124; Gryffindor – 148; and leading the pack….Ravenclaw – 241.  Tomorrow we celebrate Orange Shirt Day with an assembly at 1:45pm.  Please have your child wear something orange as points will be awarded to each House based on participation.  The history of Orange Shirt Day is the story of Phyllis Webstad.  She excitedly wore her brand new orange shirt that her granny had bought her for the first day at residential school.  When she arrived at school, her orange shirt was taken away from her and it was never returned.  In September, 2013, the Truth & Reconciliation Commission held an event in Vancouver where Phyllis’ story was shared.  The idea was that on September 30, everyone would wear an orange shirt to honour those who survived residential school and the memory of those who did not return, while recognizing the harm done to all indigenous people. This is our commitment to show that every child matters.

Thank you so much to everyone who has paid for the school agenda & school supplies.  If you haven’t yet, we would appreciate you taking care of this as soon as possible through School Cash Online.  A dark green form, giving detailed instructions on how to sign up for School Cash Online, was sent home with your child in their brown envelope.  If you have any further questions about how to sign up, please contact the Office.

Tomorrow will be the first of many Treat Days, where students can buy a treat for $1.00 at their afternoon recess break.  (There is a limit of one treat per student.)

Picture day is coming on Thursday, October 4.  Make it simple by ordering your portraits online, using your Picture Day ID and child’s first name to get started. If you prefer to order on paper, we will be sending an order form home as well.  Remember to smile and have fun!

A reminder of our upcoming fourth annual Family Film Festival! This event is based on the 24 hour film festivals that are held all over the world. Participants create a home film based on an inspiration package. If your family would like to participate, you can sign up by submitting $10 through School Cash Online and completing a registration form that will be available in the office between September 24 and October 10th.  On Friday, October 12th at 3:00pm, inspiration packages will be available for pickup in the front foyer by the Main Office. These packages include specific, inspiring directions to follow in the making of your film. Film-making dates for family teams are October 13-14. Finished movies must be handed in at the office on Monday, October 15th @ 9:00am. On Thursday, October 18th at 6:00pm, we will have our exciting Red Carpet Screening Night, which is open to all families of the school.  Concession items will be available and prizes will be awarded to the film makers.
